Lesson 01.03
Healthcare Interoperability
EDITORIALLY REVIEWEDInteroperability means different healthcare systems can exchange information, understand what the information means, and use it correctly.
Simply moving a file is not enough. The receiving system must know which patient, visit, order, result, or medication the data describes.

Connected hospital systems
An integration hub exchanges agreed information with clinical and administrative systems. Follow this lesson's diagram for the actual processing boundaries and sequence.
View original illustration ↗Illustrative scene from the HL7 image library. See the lesson for the technical explanation. The three parts of interoperability
- Exchange: System A can send information to System B.
- Understand: System B reads the same meaning from the information.
- Use: System B safely updates its own workflow or patient record.
Real-World Example: Ronaldo is discharged
When Ronaldo leaves Gotham Memorial Hospital, the EHR sends an HL7 discharge message. The pharmacy system must understand that his hospital visit has ended and stop active inpatient medication work.
- Ronaldo is discharged
- EHR creates ADT^A03
- Integration engine validates and routes it
- Pharmacy accepts the message
- Inpatient medication workflow closes
Important distinction
Connectivity only proves that two systems can communicate. Interoperability proves that they exchange meaningful information and use it correctly.
Flash Memory
Interoperability = Exchange + Understand + Use.
